If you cannot remote access to your Windows Home Server or the Home Server icon turned to gray, you most likely need to do the following to fix it: 

• Login to your Windows Home Server Console (you can either right click on the WHS gray icon on your desktop or laptop or remote desktop using RDC) and Click on  Settings --> Remote Access and turn it on
• Click on the Start menu, navigate to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Internet Information Service --> Stop the IIS and Run it again (Restart IIS)

You can also download the Windows Home Server Connector from http://yourserver:55000/ and reinstall lthe WHS connector on your desktop or laptop.
